Hocus Pocus is returning for a brand-new sequel almost 30 years after the original movie opened in theaters, but a Disney+ Movie Cast member says that the biggest difference is the film actually has fans this time. In September of 2022, almost 30 years after the release of Hocus Pocus, Disney+ released Hocus Pocus 2, the long-awaited sequel featuring the witches newest adventures, this time directed by Ann Fletcher. Hocus Pocus 2 serves as both prequel and sequel, beginning in Salem, in 1653, with the Dennison brothers origin story.
The upcoming Hocus Pocus 2 stars Whitney Peak, the breakout of Gossip Girl, as Becca, Lilya Buckingham as Cassie, and Belissa Escobedo as Izzy, three young women in modern-day Salem inciting the Sanderson sisters wrath. The Kathy Najimy-starring follow-up – set three decades after the events of the first movie, featuring even more magical effects – is a bit better with the CGI. Between the cheerful musical numbers featuring new takes on familiar songs (Sanderson sisters version of I Put A Spell On You is a standout from Disneys 1993 movie, and in some ways, they are taking blondies place in the sequel) and visual effects that are reminiscent of the ones used in 1993, Hocus Pocus 2 is at its most satisfying when referencing the first movie.
From the opening scene in the movie, to the obvious improvements in variety, to certain identifiable costumes and props, Hocus Pocus 2 is just as much about how it is different from the original 1993 movie, to how Hocus Pocus 2 is just as much about how Hocus Pocus 2 is just as much of a lot. Much like how the original 1993 movie begins in 1963 Salem and jumps to the present day in 1993, the sequel jumps forward to a much more contemporary 2022. The newest Disney+ filmHocus Pocus 2 revisits the 1993 Disney movie, which sees three seventeenth-century witches, who are unwittingly revived by a teen boy, spending a Halloween night searching for the childs soul, which is consumed to remain alive on the night of the Halloween.
In the original 1993 movie, it is no secret the Sanderson sisters were hated in Salem, in an age where witches were still misunderstood and were inevitably hanged for witchcraft. At the end of the original movie, the sisters were broken, as were their clothes, but this did not stop Perez from refreshing and updating their costumes for Hocus Pocus 2. While their costumes became an important source of Halloween costume inspiration, Perezs improvements in the sequel included different varieties of materials, which encouraged further wardrobe experiments.
