Formed in August 1992 by guitarists Mana and Közi, Malice Mizer stands as a pillar of the Japanese visual kei movement. Their name combines the words malice and misery, representing their philosophical inquiry into the human condition. Unlike typical rock groups, they incorporated heavy classical influences, French pop, and electronic elements into their sound. Their performances were more like theatrical plays than standard concerts, featuring elaborate stage sets and silent acting sequences that mesmerized audiences.

The group is famous for its distinct eras, each defined by a specific vocalist and musical direction. The early period featured Tetsu and leaned heavily into 80s gothic rock and post-punk. Following his departure, the Gackt era began in 1995, marking their rise to mainstream popularity. This period introduced a lighter, more romantic sound known as art rock, blending synth-pop with baroque melodies. During this time, the members donned costumes inspired by 17th-century French aristocracy, cementing their visual identity.

Tragedy struck the group in 1999 with the sudden passing of their drummer, Kami. Despite this loss, the remaining members recruited Klaha, a classically trained vocalist, to lead their final era.
