Malice Mizer stands as a monumental pillar in the visual kei genre and Japanese rock history. Founded in 1992 by guitarists Mana and Közi, the group distinguished itself through a unique blend of classical music, rock, and electronic sounds. Their performances were more than just concerts; they were theatrical productions featuring elaborate costumes inspired by French aristocracy and gothic themes. The band name itself stems from the words malice and misery, exploring the tragic aspects of the human condition.

The group progressed through three distinct eras, each marked by a different vocalist: Tetsu, Gackt, and Klaha. The Gackt era, running from 1995 to 1999, is frequently regarded as their commercial peak, producing memorable tracks that blended rock energy with symphonic grandeur. Following the departure of Gackt and the tragic passing of drummer Kami, the band moved into a darker, more symphonic direction with Klaha. Mana, the band leader, also utilized the platform to popularize the Gothic Lolita fashion style through his label Moi-même-Moitié. Although they paused activities in 2001, their impact on music and fashion remains profound.
