In South Africa, Rodriguez’s albums had become underground sensations, with his lyrics of social and political commentary striking a chord with the country’s population during apartheid. His music was smuggled into the country, and his records were bootlegged and traded on the black market.  

Despite his anonymity in the United States, Rodriguez’s music continued to inspire and influence countless South Africans. His songs became anthems of resistance and hope, providing a much-needed voice for those living under oppression. However, Rodriguez remained oblivious to his newfound fame in South Africa.

It wasn’t until 1997 that a documentary filmmaker, Stephen Sugar, discovered Rodriguez’s story. Intrigued by the musician’s obscurity and the cult following he had amassed in South Africa, Sugar embarked on a quest to find him. After years of searching, Sugar finally tracked down Rodriguez, who was living a modest life in Detroit, unaware of his international impact.  

The documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man,” premiered in 2012 and quickly garnered critical acclaim. It chronicled Rodriguez’s journey, from his early days as an aspiring musician to his unexpected fame in South Africa. The film’s success brought Rodriguez the recognition he had long deserved, and he embarked on a world tour, performing to sold-out crowds.
